Condolences to Charlotte Whaley in the loss of her father, Lloyd Pies
Memorial Service for Lloyd Allen Pies, 91 of Sisseton SD will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Roberts County 4-H Building, Sisseton, SD
with Gabe Krause as the speaker and closing prayer by Samuel Miller.
There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Cahill Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Lloyd Allen Pies, 91, of Sisseton, SD, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD.
He was the husband of Dorothy (Althoff) Pies. They celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary on August 24, 2023.
Lloyd Allen Pies was born August 5, 1932, on a farm northeast of Ortley, SD, he was the son of Philip and Leona (Donat) Pies.
Lloyd had three brothers (Rudolph, Merl, and Kenneth) and five sisters (Geraldine, Arvis, Joyce, Arlyne, and Karen).
He attended country school through the 8th grade and then worked on the family Pies farm in Alto Township, Roberts County, SD.
He also worked as a laborer for Donald Erickson and Glen Knapp until his enlistment into the US Air Force on November 26, 1952.
While in the military he earned his GED diploma and high school certificate from Pierre, SD. Lloyd married Dorothy Elizabeth Althoff, daughter of Simon & Ella (Gramberg) Althoff, on August 24, 1952. They had five daughters.
Lloyd and Dorothy purchased a farm upon his discharge from the military located in One Road Township, Roberts County, SD.
They had a dairy farm until 1974 and raised hogs and sheep.
He then was a carpenter for various contractors and worked alongside Dorothy with the Pies Fire Equipment business from 1983 to 2015.
Lloyd was well known in the area for shearing sheep, which he did for over 50 years alongside his cousin Everett Pies and Donald Simonson.
He retired from shearing after an electrical shock, making it impossible to continue. Lloyd officially retired from work when he had a stroke in 2015.
Lloyd was an avid trapper, hunter, and fisherman, and had so many stories to share of his adventures.
He loved reading, tending his gardens and feeding the birds so he could watch them from his south window at the farm.
He loved a good card game around the table with friends and family while sharing his many stories.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Dorothy and five daughters, Charlotte Whaley (John), Valerie Miller (Donald), Dorcella Hagen, Cindy Steen (Kevin), and Melanie Wilson (Jason).
Lloyd had twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Condolences to the family can be sent to 123 East Chestnut Street, Apt. 502, Sisseton, SD 57262
